Travilah is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States and near the very wealthy suburban community of Potomac, MD.

Geography

As an unincorporated area, Travilah's boundaries are not officially defined. Travilah is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at coor dms|39|3|23|N|77|14|14|W|city (39.056453, -77.237198)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 15.6 square miles (40.3 km²), of which, 14.4 square miles (37.2 km²) of it is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) of it (7.65%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 7,442 people, 2,366 households, and 2,122 families residing in the area. The population density was 517.9 people per square mile (200.0/km²). There were 2,447 housing units at an average density of 170.3/sq mi (65.7/km²). The racial makeup of the area was 79.80% White, 3.48% African American, 0.08% Native American, 13.71% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.72% of the population.

There were 2,366 households out of which 45.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 83.8% were married couples living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.3% were non-families. 8.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.15 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the area, the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 34.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the area was $160,323, and the median income for a family was $171,879. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus $55,000 for females. The per capita income for the area was $77,129. About 1.6% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.7% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.
