Valery Georgievich Karpin ( _ru. Валерий Георгиевич Карпин; _et. Valeri Karpin) (born February 2, 1969 in Narva, Estonian SSR) is a former professional Russian football midfielder and current CEO of FC Spartak Moscow. Upon retiring from football, Karpin lived in the city of Vigo, where he was a businessman and sponsor of several sport teams, before returning to Moscow in 2008. Club career

On the club level, Karpin has played for Fakel Voronezh (1989), Spartak Moscow (1990-94), Real Sociedad (1994-96 and 2002-05), Valencia CF (1996-97), and Celta Vigo (1997-2002). Karpin was named Russian Footballer of the Year in 1999. He retired after the 2005 season with Sociedad. He returned to football in 2007 to play for Coruxo FC in the Tercera División, the fourth tier of the Spanish league pyramid. He made his debut for the new club in a goalless draw against Racing de Ferrol.

International career

For Russia, Karpin has been capped 72 times, scoring 17 goals (he was also capped once for the CIS). He scored Russia's first goal after the breakup of the Soviet Union, in a 2-0 win against Mexico on August 17, 1992. Karpin played for Russia at the 1994 World Cup, Euro 96, and the 2002 World Cup.

Retirement

In 2007 Karpin became the holder of road cycling team Karpin-Galicia. He also owns a real estate company with former Celta Vigo team-mate Michel Salgado.

In August 2008, Karpin was named as general director of FC Spartak Moscow, replacing Sergei Shavlo.
