The song's narrator is a young female singer attempting to become a successful music artist. The lyrics take the form of a letter written to the singer's mother, describing the singer's attempts to make herself known::"Dear Mom and Dad, please send money:"I'm so broke that it ain't funny:"I don't need much, just enough to get me through:"Please don’t worry 'cause I'm all right:"I’m playin’ here at the bar tonight:"This time, I’m gonna make our dreams come true:"Well, I love you more than anything in the world:"Love, your baby girl".
By the end of the song, the narrator has achieved her dream, or believes she is on her way to that goal:
:"Dear Mom and Dad, I'll send money:"I'm so rich that it ain't funny:"Well, it ought to be more than enough to get you through:"Please don't worry 'cause I'm all right:"See, I'm staying here at the Ritz tonight:"What do ya know, it made our dreams come true..."
Before ending however, the singer assures her parents that, even with all of her wealth and new possessions, she still loves them "more than anything in the world."
