Canadian Citizenship Test

Run by Citizenship and Immigration Canada(CIC), the Canadian Citizenship Test is a test applicants for Canadian citizenship that are aged between 18 and 54 who also meet the basic requirements for citizenship are required to take. As the official languages of Canada, the test is available in both French and English.

The test

The test lasts for 30 minutes and contains 20 multiple choice questions. Applicants for citizenship must answer at least 60%, or 12 questions, correctly in order to pass the test. They must also answer "all" questions correctly relating to the electoral system in order to be successful.

Content of the test

The test contains questions drawn from a pool of around 200 taken from the official guide "A Look At Canada" and assesses knowledge and language abilities. * Rights and responsibilities of a Canadian citizen("e.g." "Name three legal rights protected by the "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms".")
* Canadian history - ("e.g." "Who were the United Empire Loyalists?")
* Canadian politics - ("e.g." "How are members of Parliament chosen?")
* Canadian physical and political geography - ("e.g." "Where are the Parliament buildings located?")
* Specific questions about the applicant's region - ("e.g." "What is the name of the premier of your province or territory?")

The test also assesses language abilities. In order to pass the test, the applicant must understand simple statements and questions and communicate simple information to CIC staff in either French or English.

After passing

If the applicant answers at least 60% of the questions correctly and the citizenship judge deems that the applicant meets all requirements for citizenship, the applicant will be asked to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. There, the applicant will have to make an oath and will then receive a certificate of citizenship.

After failing

If the applicant fails the citizenship test, then he or she will be invited to have an interview with a citizenship judge for about 15 to 30 minutes. There, the judge will assess whether or not the applicant has the necessary knowledge and language abilities for citizenship.

Pass Rate

Approximately 150,000 people every year are granted Canadian Citizenship. Independent surveys such as the National Angus Reid Poll have found that around 45% of people who already have Canadian Citizenship failed the test.
