Kauguri

Kauguri

Kauguri is a residential area in the western part of Jūrmala, a city in Latvia. It is estimated that the population is approximately one-half of Jūrmala's population, so it is more than 20,000. As part of a resort town, Kauguri has changed a great deal since Latvia regained its independence in 1991; modern shops, cultural and medical facilities attract many people from far and near. However, the old places such as the Kauguri library have since closed down in recent years because of break-ins and loss of multiple valuable books. Many new business establishments are owned by either Lithuanians or Germans. Because of the recent entry into the European Union, food, and product prices have gone up, but the incomes have been slow to follow. In some instances, bread prices have soared 75%.Kauguri stretches for 2 km along the Gulf of Riga that washes the golden-sandy beach.

There are 3 high schools in Kauguri, a number of kindergartens, as well as a bank, insurance agency, and travel agency. It is also home to the football club FK Jūrmala, playing in the Virsliga.

It takes about 40 minutes to get to Kauguri from Riga (the capital city of Latvia) by car, about 50 minutes by bus and about an hour by train.
