municipality in the province Groningen in the northeasternNetherlands , which was founded in 1990 during a large municipal reorganization. The former municipalitiesFinsterwolde and Nieuweschans were abolished and added toBeerta . In 1992, the new municipality was given its current name.It is one of the only four municipalities in the Netherlands that have communist councillors (the other three are
Heiloo ,Scheemda andLemsterland ). In the 2002 municipal elections theNew Communist Party of the Netherlands became the largest party in Reiderland (44%) with five council members of thirteen. Since the NCPN was the largest faction in the council, the party also had members Court of Mayor and the Aldermen, together with a local party.In the 2006 elections NCPN lost 3 of their 5 seats (2 to
PvdA and 1 to SP). In total NCPN got 18.3% of the votes.Population centers
