According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.4square mile s (6.2km² ), all land.Litchfield also has the St. Joseph River flowing close to the down town area, within the city limits.Litchfield has a growing industrial base and is centrally located in Southern Mid-Michigan. Litchfield is one of two cities in the county with a public pool.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,458 people, 568 households, and 362 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 608.9 per square mile (235.5/km²). There were 604 housing units at an average density of 252.2/sq mi (97.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.42% White, 0.21% African American, 0.07% Asian, 0.62% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.99% of the population.There were 568 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $39,292, and the median income for a family was $47,500. Males had a median income of $34,464 versus $24,671 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $17,362. About 5.6% of families and 10.3% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 17.9% of those age 65 or over.Other Information
Litchfield's public school will shut down by 2024, after which all students must go to either Homer, Jonesville, or Quincy schools, all of which are in Michigan. Litchfield has a public library, two restaurants, four service stations, and three churches located within city limits. The Endicott Generating Station is located there.
