History

The name "Ivy Tech" derives from an initialism (IV Tech) of the original name for the school, Indiana Vocational Technical College, which was established in 1963 to provide technical and vocational education for various industries. Ivy Tech's name was officially changed to Ivy Tech State College in 1995. In 1999, Ivy Tech entered into a partnership with Vincennes University to form the Community College of Indiana. The partnership ended and Ivy Tech was rechartered in 2005 to be known as a system of community colleges named Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana that is no longer associated with Vincennes University. Now Ivy Tech is a full-service community college that offers Career Development Certificates, Technical Certificates, and Associate Degrees in arts & design, business, education, general education, health sciences, public services, and technology. It is the one of the largest statewide community college systems in the country.
