Cyber Sunday (2006) was the first annual Cyber Sunday professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on November 5, 2006 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, with 7,000 fans attending.[2] It replaced the previous Taboo Tuesday event, and had the same concept.

This event had the unique feature of being interactive, which other pay-per-views do not have. Fans could vote, via WWE's official website, for selective characteristics in the scheduled matches, including opponents, stipulations, match types, etc. The voting for the event started on October 16, 2006, and ended during the event.

The main event was the "Champion of Champions" match, between WWE's three top champions.[3] The three champions in the match were WWE Champion John Cena, World Heavyweight Champion King Booker, and ECW World Champion The Big Show.[3] The fans could vote for who would defend their championship in this match.[4] Booker won the match by pinning Cena following interference from Kevin Federline.[5][6] The predominant match on the card was D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) versus Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton). Rated-RKO won the match after Orton pinned Triple H following an RKO onto a steel chair. The featured matches on the undercard were Jeff Hardy versus Carlito for the WWE Intercontinental Championship and Lita versus Mickie James in a Diva Lumberjack match for the WWE Women's Championship.

Background

The main feud heading into Cyber Sunday was between WWE Champion John Cena, World Heavyweight Champion King Booker, and ECW World Champion The Big Show, the top champion of each of the three brands. This feud began on the October 9 edition of Raw, where they came face to face, arguing about who was the most dominant champion in WWE.[7] WWE Chairman Vince McMahon interrupted, and booked a triple threat "Champion of Champions" match at Cyber Sunday between the three of them.[7] This also gave each show's General Manager an opportunity to choose opponents for each other's champion that night.[7] This resulted in Big Show defeating Jeff Hardy and Booker defeating Rob Van Dam; however, the match between Cena and The Undertaker was interrupted by Booker, Big Show, and The Undertaker's storyline rival, Mr. Kennedy.[7] At the same time, Cena began a minor feud with Kevin Federline.[8] Federline, as the on-screen close friend of Johnny Nitro and Melina's, appeared on Raw to promote his album, "Playing With Fire".[8] Cena rapped about Federline, but Nitro came out to Federline's defense and was thrown out of the ring by Cena.[8] Cena was then interrupted by his two Cyber Sunday opponents, and McMahon who announcemed that a championship would be on the line at Cyber Sunday.[8] Cena performed the FU on Federline, after being insulted.[8] The feud between the champions continued on the October 20 edition of SmackDown!, when Big Show and Cena were at ringside during Booker's title defense against Batista.[9] Batista speared Booker onto Big Show, who, in response, assaulted Batista, ending the match via disqualification.[9] Cena then joined the brawl, and SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long announced a tag team match for the next week.[9] On the next Raw, Cena defeated Nitro after an FU, but was assaulted afterwards by his Cyber Sunday opponents, who turned on each other shortly after to start a brawl between the four to end the show.[10] Batista and Cena were successful in the tag team match, after Big Show abandoned Booker.[11] The next week, on Raw, a preview of Cyber Sunday's interactivity was displayed when fans voted for Cena's opponent for the night, between Big Show, Booker, and Jonathan Coachman.[12] Coachman won in the voting, but was easily defeated by Cena.[12]

The main feud on the undercard was between D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) and Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton). The feud began to develop on the October 9 edition of Raw, when Edge convinced Orton that Triple H was the reason for their unsuccess.[7] Orton lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Triple H in 2004,[13] and Edge lost a title match due to interference from DX the previous week.[14] This led to Edge and Orton joining forces.[7] On the next edition of Raw, Edge praised Mr. McMahon's booking skills and suggested that he and Orton have a match with DX at Cyber Sunday where fans could choose a special guest referee.[8] Mr. McMahon liked the idea, and decided for the options to be Coachman, Eric Bischoff, and himself.[3][8] The following week, Orton pinned Triple H in a match after hitting Triple H in the head with a steel chair.[10] Coachman had been the special guest referee, but Michaels superkicked him after he tried to count the pinfall, after Edge had interfered.[10] On October 30, McMahon, Coachman, and Bischoff were guests on Edge's talkshow, The Cutting Edge, and McMahon booked a match between Orton and Triple H for later that night, with Edge as the guest referee.[12] Before the match could start, however, Triple H performed a Pedigree on Edge, meaning he couldn't officiate.[12] Edge recovered and interfered, meaning the match ended in a no-contest.[12] Edge and Orton attacked Triple H with steel chairs, until Triple H got his sledgehammer and retaliated.[12]

Event

Before the event went live on pay-per-view, Super Crazy pinned Rob Conway.[2][5] The first match that aired on pay-per-view was Umaga versus Kane who had won the vote with 49%.[2][5] The match quickly moved to the outside, where Umaga missed a Samoan Spike, instead hitting the ringpost, and Kane slammed him into the ring steps.[5][15] Kane took control hitting two Corner Clotheslines, but Umaga was able to counter with a Samoan Drop.[15] Kane performed a Back Suplex, before going to the top rope for his Diving Clothesline.[5][15] Umaga retaliated with a Clothesline of his own, before performing a Samoan Spike to gain the pinfall victory.[5][15][16]

The second match was the Texas Tornado match between Cryme Tyme, the Highlanders, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, and Charlie Haas and Viscera.[5][15][17] The match began with the Highlanders and Cade and Murdoch brawling on the outside, and Cryme Tyme and Haas and Viscera on the inside.[15] The Highlanders quickly gained the advantage in the match, and cleared the ring, before performing stereo Planchas to the outside.[5][15] After this, Haas and Viscera begin to take control, until Viscera accidentally hit Haas, and was thrown to the outside.[15] Cade and Murdoch then performed their Sweet and Sour on Robbie of the Highlanders, but were thrown out of the ring by Cryme Tyme, who then pinned Robbie for the victory.[5][15][17] After the match in keeping with their "street thug" gimmick, Cryme Tyme stole the color commentator, Jerry Lawler's laptop.[5][17] The next match was the Intercontinental Championship match between the champion, Jeff Hardy, and Carlito, who earned 62% of the vote.[5][15][18] After a handshake, both men attamepted quick pinning combinations, including a Backslide by Carlito.[15] Carlito dominated and blocked a Swanton Bomb by raising his knees.[5][15] Carlito performed a Springboard Corkscrew Senton, but only got a two-count and Hardy was able to perform his Whisper in the Wind.[5][15] Hardy climbed to the top rope, and when Carlito attempted to stop him, Carlito was pushed to the floor.[5][15] Hardy performed the Swanton Bomb to get the three count, and retain the Intercontinental Championship.[5][15][18]

The fourth match was the tag team match between Rated-RKO, Edge and Randy Orton and D-Generation X (DX), Shawn Michaels and Triple H, with Eric Bischoff, with 60% of the vote, as special guest referee.[5][15] Michaels quickly took control of Edge, before tagging in Triple H.[15] After back and forth action, Orton and Edge gained control over Michaels after they pulled him into the ringpost.[15] While Bischoff was preventing Triple H from entering the ring, Rated-RKO continued to double team Michaels, and Orton performed a Backbreaker.[5][15] Edge attempted to perform a Spear on Michaels but hit Bischoff instead.[5][15][19] Referee Chad Patton entered the ring to replace Bischoff, and after a Spear and RKO to Triple H, Orton only got a two-count.[5][15] Orton attempted another RKO on Triple H, but Michaels interrupted and superkicked him.[5][15] Bischoff prevented Patton from counting the pin, and Michaels pursued him, until he was hit with a steel chair by Edge.[5][15][19] Orton then performed an RKO on Triple H, onto the steel chair, and Bischoff made the three-count.[5][15][19]

The next match was the final of the tournament for the WWE Women's Championship between Lita and Mickie James.[5][15] The match was a Lumberjill match, which gained 46% of the vote.[5][15] The match begun with both Divas throwing the other to the outside, to try and gain an advantage.[15] Lita dominated the early proceedings, utilising a Sleeper Hold, until James countered using a Cross-arm Breaker.[15] After some more back and forth action between James and Lita, Lita picked up the victory by pinning James after a DDT.[5][15][20] The sixth match was the World Tag Team Title match between The Spirit Squad, and Ric Flair and Roddy Piper, who won the voting with 46%.[5][15] Although neither Sgt. Slaughter or Dusty Rhodes won the vote to be Flair's partner, they accompanied Flair and Piper to ringside.[5][15] Kenny and Mikey were the two Spirit Squad members who were defending the championships, and it was Kenny who began the match with Flair.[15] Flair quickly tagged in Piper, who was dominated by the Spirit Squad for the majority of the match.[5] After Mikey missed a Splash, Piper was able to tag Flair.[15] Flair locked Mikey in the Figure Four Leglock, but Kenny stopped Mikey from submitting by performing a Guillotine leg drop on Flair.[5][15] Shortly afterwards however, Flair caught Mikey in the Figure Four Leglock again, and Piper prevented Kenny from making the save.[5][15] Mikey tapped out, giving Flair and Piper the win, and the Tag Team Championships.[21] After the match, Flair, Piper, Slaughter, and Rhodes celebrated in the ring after stopping the Spirit Squad from attacking Flair and Piper.[21]

The main event was the "Champion of Champions" match between the WWE Champion, John Cena, World Heavyweight Champion King Booker, and the ECW Champion The Big Show.[5][15] The fans voted for the World Heavyweight Championship to be on the line in this match.[5][15] At the start of the match, Booker tried to form an alliance with Cena, but was prevented from doing so by Big Show, who quickly began to dominate.[15] Soon, however, Booker and Cena combined to clothesline Big Show over the top rope, and they began to fight.[5][15] Cena tried an FU, but it was countered into a DDT by Booker.[5][15] Big Show re-entered the ring, and performed a chokeslam on Booker.[15] He attempted to put Cena through the announce table with a chokeslam, but Cena countered and threw him into the ringpost.[15] Back inside the ring, Cena performed an FU on Queen Sharmell when she attempted to hit him with a title belt.[5][6][15] Cena performed the STFU on Booker, but while the referee was tending to Sharmell, Kevin Federline hit Cena with the title belt.[6][15] This distracted Cena, and allowed Booker to hit him again with the title.[6] Booker then pinned Cena to retain his title.[2][6]

Aftermath

After his involvement in the main event, Kevin Federline challenged John Cena to a match on the January 1 edition of Raw,[22] a match he won due to interference of Umaga who was in a midst of a feud with Cena.[23] Shortly after this match, Cena defeated Umaga at New Year's Revolution 2007 with a roll-up, ending Umaga's one year undefeated streak.[24] Then at the Royal Rumble Cena defeated Umaga again in a Last Man Standing match.[25] After the Royal Rumble Cena and Umaga's feud ended.

Roddy Piper and Ric Flair dropped the World Tag Team Championship two weeks later, to Rated-RKO after Piper was told he had cancer.[26] The Spirit Squad continued their feud with Flair, and were defeated by him, and fellow "legends" at Survivor Series.[27] The night after Survivor Series, the Spirit Squad were defeated in their last match on Raw, and the stable disbanded.[28] Kenny was the only member to stay on WWE television.[29]

D-Generation X and Rated-RKO continued feuding, and at Survivor Series, Team DX won with a clean sweep of Team Rated-RKO.[30] The feud continued until New Year's Revolution, where the match between them for the World Tag Team Championship ended in a No Contest after Triple H delivered a Spinebuster on Orton and tore his quadriceps which was the main cause for the end of the DX return storyline.[31]

After she won her fourth WWE Women's Championship, Lita continued her feud with Mickie James.[22][26][32] After she announced her retirement, she dropped the title to James a month later at Survivor Series 2006.[33]

The next night on Raw, Johnny Nitro defeated Jeff Hardy in a No Disqualification Match to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship after having been disqualified in a subsequent match moments before.[22][34] The next week, however, Hardy defeated Nitro to win his third WWE Intercontinental Championship.[26][34] Hardy and Nitro continued to feud, and they both reunited with their former tag team partners, Hardy with his brother, Matt, and Nitro reformed MNM with Joey Mercury.[35][36] The Hardys defeated MNM at the Royal Rumble,[37] and Hardy beat Nitro in a steel cage match at New Year's Revolution to retain his Intercontinental Championship.[38]
