Watchtower is an American progressive/technical thrash metal band based in Austin, Texas who were mostly active in the 1980s. While the band never received much mainstream fame, they have been cited as an influence by many other progressive and technical metal bands such as Dream Theater, Death, and Control Denied.

History

Watchtower was formed in May of 1982 [http://ra.lunarservers.com/~agura3/watchtowerband.net/history.html] in Austin, Texas. The band's debut album, "Energetic Disassembly", was released in 1985. The album is notable for its heavy use of time changes and is considered to be a landmark in technical metal. [http://wm04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jxfexqw0ldhe]

The band released a second album, "Control and Resistance", in 1989. It is their first album with Ron Jarzombek as the guitarist. Shortly after, in 1990,Fact|date=August 2008 Watchtower disbanded.

Most of the members went to pursue other projects, including Ron Jarzombek's solo project Spastic Ink, Jason McMaster's addition to Dangerous Toys, and Doug Keyser and Rick Colaluca's venture called Retarted Elf.

Watchtower re-united in 1999 with the original line-up.Fact|date=August 2008 The band had plans on releasing a new album, "Mathematics", in 2006, but due to some conflicts between the band members, the release of the album is currently very questionable.

A compilation of early recordings, unreleased tracks, and material from the band's first two albums, "Demonstrations In Chaos", was released in 2002.
