Paio Soares de Taveirós

Paio Soares de Taveirós

Paio Soares de Taveirós [His name is also spelled "Paay Soarez de Taveiroos". Paio can also be Pai and the "de" is sometimes omitted.] was a minor Galician nobleman and famous troubadour of the first half of the thirteenth century. He was from Minho and was a brother of the troubadour Pêro Velho de Taveirós. Of his works, six "cantigas de amor", three "cantigas de amigo", and two "tensos" (one with Martim Soares and one with his brother) survive.

He was one of the earliest authors in Galician-Portuguese and his celebrated "Cantiga da Garvaia", a satiric "cantiga de amor" (or "cantiga de escárnio") written perhaps as early as 1189, may be the earliest surviving work in that language. Just how much the "Cantiga de Garvaia" reflected real sentiment, however, is debatable today.
