WDUR (1490 AM) is a radio station in Durham, North Carolina, owned by Triangle Sports Broadcasters.

History

WDUR was formerly known as WSSB in the 1940s and 1950s and was an affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System.

Charles Cook was a DJ when the station was the number one Top 40 station in Durham in the late 1960s. He played white and black artists, and he was one of the few white DJs to acknowledge black schools and their accomplishments [Laura Collins, "'Country Boy' Radio Personality Dies at 82," "The Herald-Sun", August 13, 2008.] .

During the 1980s and 1990s WDUR played music targeting African-Americans. For part of the first decade of the 21st century the station aired the same programming as WTSB, a sports talk station.

Programming

WDUR is now known as Radio Luz 1490 AM.

On August 27, 2007, an application [http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101201824&formid=314&fac_num=36943 Application for consent to assignment of broadcast station license] ] was filed with the FCC to transfer the license to Prieto Broadcasting, which has agreed to pay $900,000 contingent on FCC approval, which was granted on October 15, 2007. Prieto Broadcasting is located in Doraville, Georgia, and specializes in Spanish language radio targeting the Hispanic community. The FCC process cited in the authorization requires that the parties notify the FCC within 90 days after approval that the transfer of the license and station to the new owner has been consummated. As of May 2008, that notice has not been received by the FCC and the license remains in the name of Triangle Sports Broadcasters.
