Pujehun is a rural town in Pujehun District in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone, next to the border with Liberia. It is the capital and largest town of Pujehun District. Pujehun had a population of 3,859 in the 1985 census, though it is larger today. The population of Pujehun is almost entirely inhabited by the Mende ethnic group. The Mende language along with the Krio language are widely spoken in the town. Pujehun lies about 205 miles south-south-east of the nation's capital, Freetown. The town is a stronghold of the Sierra Leone People's Party, the main opposition party in Sierra Leone.

History

Pujehun was named after the powerful Mende warrior Nyagua, who was residing at the nearby village of Panguma. When Nyagua and his men went to battle, they used the site of the present village as their resting place. At that time There was a lot of pepper growing in the town, which the Mende call "puei." At any time they reached that area, they called it Pujehun.
