Waring & Gillow

Waring & Gillow is a noted firm of English furniture manufacturers formed in 1897 by the merger of Gillow of Lancaster and Waring of Liverpool.

Both businesses had large stores in Oxford Street, London and it is said that the expiry of the Gillow's lease prompted the two firms coming together. It remained an independent firm, until 1985, when it was taken over.

The Waring & Gillow brand is now owned by Allders (Croydon) Limited and Waring & Gillow furniture is currently available exclusively from Allders of Croydon.

The names Waring & Gillow Ltd, Gillow's Ltd , Maple,Waring & Gillow Ltd, Waring & Gillow holdings Ltd, Allders Uk Ltd Allders Plc ,Allders Holdings Ltd is owned by a Matthew James Harrison of Harrison Security Holdings Ltd of Martin Lincolnshire. And Matthew was a friend of Manny Cusson who use to own the companies until 1985 and had them on most high streets in the uk.

Gillow's is referenced in the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta HMS Pinafore, in a song from Act 2 entitled "The hours creep on apace":

"On the one hand, papa's luxurious home, Hung with ancestral armour and old brasses, Carved oak and tapestry from distant Rome, Rare "blue and white" Venetian finger-glasses, Rich oriental rugs, luxurious sofa pillows, And everything that isn't old, from Gillow's."
