"The Beginning" was the opening episode of "The X-Files" sixth season.

Plot

A new, violent kind of alien that developed from a mutated alien virus is on the loose in Arizona. Mulder and Scully get reassigned from the X-Files while Agent Spender and Agent Fowley become the new agents in charge of the X-files. Mulder and (unwillingly) Scully go to Arizona without permission to search for this new alien.

This episode saw the first appearance of James Pickens Jr. as Assistant Director Alvin Kersh.
