Carlos Zambrano is an undisputed starter on the FC Schalke 04 U-19 team, and is the captain, a great merit considering that at that age group captaincy usually goes to a native-born player. He went to FC Schalke 04 at the age of 16, after playing in the U-17 World Cup in 2005, with Peru as hosts. Schalke 04's defence did not concede with Zambrano present for the first 5 games of the season, until the sixth match for which he was out through injury.

He has been compared with FC Bayern Munich defender Lucio for his style of play and great defense, offense, and speed. He is currently being considered by Peruvian coach José del Solar for the South American World Cup Qualifiers. Solar went to watch him play for Schalke, along with 3 other European-based Peruvians (Andres Vasquez, Roberto Merino, and Rinaldo Cruzado). On November 10, 2007, he was promoted to the FC Schalke 04 first team, and was an unused substitute. He recently signed a four year contract with Schalke 04.

On March 26, 2008 he made his debut for the senior Peruvian National Team in a friendly match against Costa Rica. Zambrano started the match and scored a goal in the 45th minute, having a very good game despite the fact it was his debut and that he was playing with new players who were being tried out in the Peru national football team just like he was. (Among the players who were not present was the regular starting defender from Sporting Braga, Alberto Rodriguez). It is thought that he will now become a more regular starter for Peru along with Alberto Rodriguez due to the suspension for 18 months of Santiago Acasiete the other regular starter in defense. He has proven to be a great promise for the Peruvian National Team and for his club FC Schalke 04.
