Connacht Minor Hurling Championship

Connacht Minor Hurling Championship

The Connacht Minor Hurling Championship was a Minor (under 18 years of age) "knockout" competition in the game of hurling played in the province of Connacht in Ireland. The series of games were organised by the Connacht Council. The competition began in 1931, with Galway winning during the inaugural year. From 1959 to 1969 Galway followed suit with their senior counterparts and competed in the Munster Minor Hurling Championship. During these years the competition was competed for by the four other Connacht counties, with the winners going on to compete in the All-Ireland semi final. Leitrim competed in the competition for the first time in 1965, winning the competition at the first time of asking and went on to play Limerick in the All-Ireland semi final. However they failed to build on this initial triumph and suffered heavy defeats in the competition in subsequent years. Since the early 1970s the competition has not being played, instead Galway represented Connacht on the All-Ireland stage while the remaining counties competed in the open-draw special minor hurling championship. The competition was briefly resumed in 1989 with Galway winning easily on both occasions. Galway has represented Connacht in the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship since 1991.
