Cumberland mine railroad

Cumberland mine railroad

The Cumberland Mine Railroad operates a railroad carrying solely coal. It is not connected to the North American Railroad system in any way. This is known as an isolated railroad. One EMD SD38-2 locomotive is used to pull coal trains from a mine to a barge dock on the Monongahela River. The line was once owned by United States Steel, as most of the coal was used downriver in primary steelmaking. At some point USS divested itself of this holding. Locomotive 22 is painted in USS blue colors and is the only locomotive used on this route.
