nihongo|Kyoya Hibari|雲雀 恭弥|Hibari Kyōya is a fictional character in the anime and manga series "Reborn!" created by Akira Amano. The "Reborn!" series developed into a media franchise, and consists of an anime, manga, light novels, video games, soundtracks, and other merchandise or collectibles. For the most part of the series, Hibari is portrayed as an anti-hero, taking little to no interest in the events that surround the main protagonist, Tsuna Sawada. He is introduced as the leader of the Disciplinary Committee at Tsuna's school, Namimori High. Despite his status, he is, in fact, a delinquent who uses violence to create his own form of order in school, as well as enforcing his order throughout certain parts of Namimori Town.

His surname, 'Hibari', can be translated into "skylark", a type of bird.

Character outline

Hibari is the leader of the Discipline Committee, or Prefects, who all happen to be a group of delinquents loyal to Hibari. Like his subordinates, he too is a violent delinquent who uses his status to harass other students. However, he prefers to be alone and cares little for his subordinates. His catchphrase is "I'll bite you to death," which he says to everyone who he is ready to fight. Hibari is very proud of his school, and is apparently the only person who likes their school's song. He adopted the Kokuyo assassins bird Birds'. The bird (subsequently nicknamed "Hibird" due to its connection to Hibari) becomes attached to Hibari, even in the future.Reborn piqued Hibari's curiosity early on in the series and considers him a worthy opponent, having a strong urge to fight him.

Weapons and abilities

According to Fūta's ranking list of the strongest students of Namimori High, Hibari is the number one strongest student in his school. He is a fierce and well trained fighter who has an almost insatiable bloodlust for a worthy opponent.

As his main weapon, he uses a pair of tonfa. Hibari's tonfa have also been shown to have hidden compartments containing other weapons. In the future, he is able to emit a strong Dying Will Flame onto his tonfa, using a ring.

Hibari is the Vongola Cloud Guardian and has become adept at using rings in the future. His flame has become so intense that even without the Cloud Vongola ring, he is capable of great feats of strength. However, he shatters normal rings when he uses them. The younger Hibari is also capable of emitting a massive Dying Will flame though he had recently arrived in the future. It is revealed that Dino taught him how to emit the flames.

Hibari has been shown to have more knowledge than most concerning the ring boxes and uses them at a very high proficiency.

*Hedgehog - When used, a hedgehog is shot towards the target. Due to the Cloud's ability, propagation, the hedgehog can become bigger when it takes in dying will flames.

*Needle Sphere Form - His hedgehog forms a huge airtight sphere that encloses his target. The target is then suffocated.

*Needle Sphere Form, Reversed - He creates a big airtight space where only people are allowed inside. There is limited oxygen supply. Is used to bring about a physical fight.

Plot overview

Hibari is introduced as a delinquent who executes his own form of discipline on all of Namimori High. For his exceptional skills, he is chosen by Reborn to be a part of Tsuna's family.

When Hibari goes to watch cherry blossoms, he is infected with the "Sakura-kura" disease, which makes him weak when he is around cherry blossoms, after he attempts to attack Dr. Shamal.

During the Kokuyo Gang arc, Mukuro Rokudo uses Hibari's weakness for cherry blossoms to his advantage, and easily wins against him. Shamal later gives Hayato the cure to give to him. During his second fight with Mukuro, Hibari almost wins against him, but passes out due to his injuries.

Hibari is later chosen to become the holder of the Ring of Cloud by Reborn. Dino is selected to be his home tutor, but Hibari wants nothing more than to fight Dino, who was surprised to realize that Hibari was out to kill. He returns during the Vongola Tournament and defeats Gola Moska. Caring little for the true reasons of the tournament, he then challenges Xanxus. Gola Moska was still functioning though, and went into a berserk mode and tried to annihilate everyone.

During the Sky Battle, Hibari and the other guardians are poisoned through the watches they are given. Hibari was the only one able to get the antidote himself. After giving Gokudera his cure, Hibari fights Belphegor, who had already been cured, and was badly injured before he caused Bel to run away.

In the future

Hibari is revealed to be the strongest of the Vongola Guardians nine years and ten months into the future. Initially, it seemed that no one was capable of making contact with him, but he later appears to save Hayato and Takeshi from Gamma.

After their reunion, he agrees to train Tsuna, which allows Tsuna to bring out his true inner strength. Once Hibari helps Tsuna achieve the Vongola Ring version of the X-Gloves, Hibari tells him that he has yet to use the adult Tsuna's weapon, which prompts Tsuna to figure out how to use his gloves as a weapon.

It is revealed that Hibari has previously been traveling around the world in search of information concerning the boxes, rings, and the "ultimate power". To achieve this, he started a Vongola unit called "The Foundation", which is comprised of former members of the Disciplinary Committee.

Hibari then defended the hideout against a Millefiore raid. He later infiltrates the Melone base, fighting Genkishi in the process. After Genkishi gains the upper hand, Hibari is suddenly replaced by his younger self. He is then saved by Gokudera. Hibari then activates his ring flames, which shocks Kusakabe. He opens a box, however his flames were too strong, overwhelming his hedgehog box creature, and after accidentally hurting his master with his spikes, the hedgehog goes into extreme shock and expands its spikes at an incredible speed.
