BRAF (gene)

BRAF (gene)

V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1, also known as BRAF, is a human gene.

The BRAF gene makes a protein called B-RAF, which is involved in sending signals in cells and in cell growth. This gene may be mutated [ [http://www.pnas.org/cgi/external_ref?access_num=12068308&link_type=MED] Davies H, et al. (2002) Mutations of the BRAF gene in human cancer. Nature 417:949–954.] (changed) in many types of cancer, which causes a change in the B-RAF protein. This can increase the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Some pharmaceutical firms are doing basic research to develop specific inhibitors of B-raf protein for anticancer use.
