=About the Uzbekistan-Japan Center=

The Uzbekistan-Japan Center for Human Development (UJC) was established in compliance with the agreement between the governments of Uzbekistan and Japan concluded in October 2000. Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan on one side and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the other acted as the Founders of the Center.

The purpose of this public organization is to train specialists for facilitating business development in Uzbekistan, to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen friendly relations between the two countries through communicating various information and introducing the culture and language of Japan to the people in Uzbekistan who show keen interest in this country.

UJC is open to a wide range of visitors including students, graduates, teachers, entrepreneurs and all those who wish to learn more about Japan and take part in the cultural exchange between our countries.

The Center has offices in Tashkent and Bukhara.

Activities of the Uzbekistan-Japan Center

There are four main aspects of our Center’s activities:

* Running business courses
* Teaching Japanese language
* Computer education for deaf and hearing impaired persons
* Promoting information and cultural exchange between our countries

Business Courses

In transitional period Uzbek economy needs a new generation of leaders with modern knowledge and business management skills. Thereupon, the Uzbekistan-Japan Center for Human Development has developed a unique program of short-term business courses for starting entrepreneurs and business managers where they can obtain or broaden their knowledge in order to successfully run their businesses.

Today we provide the following 4 types of business courses and consultations:
* Course A: Professional Management Program (PMP) - Intensive MBA-type Business Courses.
* Course B: Short-term trainings and seminars developed in accordance with existing request for PMP graduates and other interested people who have necessary business skills.
* Course C: One or two-day top management seminars on specially developed program seeking to meet current needs of Uzbek economy.
* Course D: Seminars & trainings for regional representatives of small and medium enterprises in Uzbekistan.
* SME Consultations: Business consultations for private enterprises.

Japanese Language Courses

The number of people interested in Japanese language learning is increasing day by day. According to the survey conducted by UJC in 2005, the total number of students of Japanese Language in Uzbekistan is 1668. It can be said that "the boom" of studying Japanese, which occurred in mid 1990s all over the world, is still continuing in Uzbekistan.

Our activities consist of following three components:

* Japanese language course for general public
* Support for Japanese language teachers and institutions
* Events for Japanese language students

Computer Courses for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Persons

Computer Courses for deaf and hearing impaired persons were organized for the first time by the Uzbekistan-Japan Center in cooperation with the Deaf Association of Uzbekistan at the end of January, 2005.

The main purpose of these courses is to provide deaf and hearing impaired persons with the opportunity to study computer literacy and popular office software, graphic editors as well as web-design and network essentials. This knowledge can help such people to obtain new or change their current work to more perspective and well-paid one because in present conditions computer skills are often required to get employed. Such kind of training is unique in Uzbekistan and we discovered a significant demand for it.

Four levels of courses are conducted; the duration of each course is 3 months or 108 hours totally (3 times a week, each lesson lasts for 3 hours). According to our experience, the majority of participants can obtain relevant skills and can successfully work with popular computer software.

Cultural Exchange

With a view to promote a diversified and interactive field for cultural exchange, there are various cultural events held at our Center (such as used book bazaars, classes of Shodo, open seminars, film demonstrations, exhibition of toys from all parts of Japan, classes of Ikebana, Origami and Karaoke, Japanese tea ceremony and digital camera courses, Makizushi and other Japanese food cooking, Dutar playing classes).

The significant number of devoted visitors participate in the majority of our cultural events during the year. UJC is in an attractive place for people who eager to know more about different aspects regarding to Japan and Japanese people.

Library

Books and video films library, audio library, magazines stand and Internet corner of the Center are always at the UJC visitors’ disposal.

Books, magazines, newspapers (except the fresh periodicals, reference materials and catalogues of universities and colleges of Japan) as well as CD, DVD and audiocassettes and videotapes can be borrowed: all library users as well as borrowed items are registered in our database. Photocopying services are also provided.

Several sets of video equipment can be used for viewing video materials individually. Visitors can enjoy the Internet corner with Japanese, English and Russian language operational systems installed to facilitate the access to information of various kind and origin.
