Transylvania is an unincorporated community located mostly in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 743.

Geography

Transylvania is located at 32.66° North, 91.25° West (ZIP Code Centroid). It is about 10 miles south of Lake Providence on U.S. Highway 65, at the junction with SR 581, not far from the Mississippi River.

The U.S. Census Bureau lacks statistics of the total area, land and water areas of Transylvania.

History

As Transylvania, Louisiana was named after Transylvania, and Transylvania is associated by many people in the United States with the Hollywood Dracula movies, the general store in Transylvania Louisiana sells Dracula and bat related merchandise to people passing through on Highway 65.

Transylvania, Louisiana was named in the early 1800’s by Transylvania University alumni Dr. W. L. Richards. He bought large acreage in the northern Louisiana area and named the town after his beloved school, Transylvania University, still in existence today in Lexington, Kentucky.
