* 25 June - Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal Republic, meets Sir Henry Loch, the British High Commissioner, in Pretoria to discuss the grievances of the Uitlanders
* 22 August - The Natal Indian Congress is founded by Mahatma Gandhi
* September - Mahatma Gandhi becomes the first Indian to be enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Natal
