* 14-16 April - A summit meeting of the leaders of East and Central African States in Lusaka and on the 16th issue the Lusaka Manifesto
* 17 April - Dorothy Fisher becomes the first woman and the 5th person to receive heart transplant under Dr Christiaan Barnard
* 25 April - 1 May - The African National Congress holds its first national consultative conference in Morogoro, Tanzania. It is now called the "Morogoro Conference"
