Small Times

Small Times

"Small Times" is an online news magazine dedicated to tracking developments in the Micro- and Nanotechnology industries.

"Small Times" was established in 2001 as the media arm of Ardesta, a so-called "business accelerator". Ardesta invested in and incubated startups in the MEMS, microstystems and nanotechnology sector. In addition, Ardesta sought to grow the entire field -- hence the media division.

Although it was the media arm of a corporation, "Small Times" enjoyed editorial independence from its funders. The company launched its website in April 2001, followed by an initial magazine publication in September 2001. A trade show was scheduled for September in Washington D.C. was canceled, as it was scheduled for a week after 9/11.

The early magazine mixed the excitement and exhuberance of a "Red Herring" with the technical acumen of "Chemical and Engineering News". It featured technology stories, startup coverage, executive profiles, and more. Meanwhile, the daily news web site included typical daily news bits about patenting activity, startup funding, research announcements, etc.

In 2005 "Small Times" was acquired by PennWell Corporation, a diversified B2B publisher based in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
