/ˈnuːz/ nooz; Ancient Greek: nous, meaning intellect, or common sense; also the local River Ouse)[1] is a student newspaper and website at the University of York. It is the oldest registered society of, and funded by the University of York Students' Union[2]. Founded in 1964 by student Nigel Fountain,[3] some twenty years before its rival York Vision. Nouse is printed three times a term with frequent website updates in between print runs.It has changed dramatically in outlook and presentation over the years, being known at one point as the Nouse Co-operative or NouseCoop, and presenting itself as a samizdat publication throughout the 1980s[citation needed]. In its current incarnation, Nouse is a politically left-of-centre paper. The last edition of the 2006–07 academic year was printed in full-size broadsheet format.
Rival paper York Vision often styles the name as "No-Use" when referring to the paper.[4]
In last few years Nouse has become one of the University's largest media societies, picking up multiple nominations and wins in the National Student Journalism Awards and Guardian Student Media Awards.[5][6]
The Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York Library has an archive of Nouse editions that stretches back to the first edition 1964.[7]

Current Information
Nouse is currently edited by Martin Spurr, with Rose Troup-Buchanan as Deputy Editor. The main section, "Nouse", contains a news section, a politics section with a "global focus" world briefing-style page, a comment and opinions section, and sports. "Muse", the arts and features supplement, runs a varied spread of features, articles, columns and satire pages and is currently edited by Sophie Walker. The website holds an archive of the printed pieces from 2005, as well as publishing content such as breaking news, sports results, live coverage of campus events and other features not in the print edition.[8] 2008/09 Technical Director Chris Northwood has led Nouse's push into new media, re-designing its award-winning website. In 2011 Technical Director Andrew Fairbairn updated the website to its current design.
Awards
2005 saw the paper claim the top prize of Best Student Newspaper category at the NUS/Mirror National Student Journalism Awards, and runner-up at the Guardian Student Newspaper Awards. It was also the only newspaper to be nominated in the design category for the NUS/Mirror awards.[9]
In 2006, Nouse was nominated for Best Student Newspaper at the Guardian Student Media Awards and the National Student Journalism Awards, as well as another Guardian nomination for Best Publication Design. Toby Green was nominated for Best Features Writer at the NUS Awards.[10]
Nouse's success continued in 2007, with former editor Heidi Blake named Guardian Student Journalist of the Year, Best Features Writer and Best Diversity Writer. The Nouse website, Nouse.co.uk came runner up in the Best Website category, following a re-design by Web Editor Emma Gawen.[11]
In 2008, Nouse came runner-up in the Best Student Newspaper and Best Student Website categories, with Muse editor Nicky Woolf taking home the Best Features Writer award at the Guardian Student Media Awards.[12]
In 2009, Nouse won the Best Student Media award in the NUS Awards. Video Editor Anna Bucks was awarded Student Broadcaster of the Year for her work with Nouse and York Student Television, while Editor Henry James Foy was shortlisted for Journalist of the Year.[13] At the 2009 Guardian Student Media Awards Nouse.co.uk was awarded Best Student Website, and Features Editor Holly Thomas was runner-up for Best Feature Writer. MUSE Editor Liam O'Brien and sports writer John Halstead were also shortlisted for Best Diversity Writer and Best Sports Journalist respectively.
In 2010[14] and 2011[15] Nouse was again nominated for Best Student Media in the NUS Awards.
Future
In common with many newspapers, Nouse is expanding into the field of new media by collaborating with other York media societies, such as a podcast with student radio station URY[16] and video news and sports reports with student television station YSTV.[17][18]

Greg Dyke wrote a column for the paper in the early 1970s, 'Gryke'. The late Labour MP Tony Banks and the author Anthony Horowitz also wrote for the paper early in its history.[19]
