In 2006, the International Astronomical Union defined a planet as a body in orbit around the Sun that was large enough to have achieved hydrostatic equilibrium and to have cleared its neighborhood of similar-sized objects.[cite press release]

However, many other objects in the Solar System, including the Sun itself, up to 20 natural satellites and potentially dozens of small Solar System bodies, are also large enough to have achieved hydrostatic equilibrium. All known spherical or spheroidal objects in the Solar System are listed below, with a sample of the largest objects in the Solar System whose shape has yet to be accurately determined. The Sun is a yellow dwarf star. It contains almost 99.9 percent of all the mass in the Solar System.
Dwarf planets
These objects are large enough to have achieved hydrostatic equilibrium, but have not cleared their neighborhoods of similar objects. Ceres is an asteroid between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The others all lie beyond Neptune's orbit.
