Gabriel Torres (born Rio de Janeiro, July 7th 1974), entrepreneur, journalist, writer and teacher is a prominent expert in electronics and computer science.

He is the founder and director of Hardware Secrets, a leading US-based computer reviewing website, and Clube do Hardware, which is the largest independent website about computers in South America. He has also written 18 books about computers (all in Brazilian Portuguese), with several of them featuring in best-selling lists at the time they were at the market.

He released its first book, Hardware Curso Completo (Hardware Complete Course), in 1996, the same year he launched his Brazilian website (Clube do Hardware) and started to write for the computer section of one of the most popular newspapers in Rio de Janeiro, O DIA, where he was a columnist from October 1996 to March 2007ref|1.

He has recently announced that he sued his former publishing house for not paying royalties from his books. He won the lawsuit and is at the moment waiting for the publishing house to pay the amount due, which wasn’t disclosed ref|2.

His hobby is training Tae Kwon Do, martial art he trains since 1992, being a 2nd degree black belt ref|3.

He has recently moved to the USAref|4.

Early years

Torres was interested by electronics since he was very young. With eight years old he already collected magazines targeted to electronics hobbyistsref|5. At his 11th birthday he got his first computer, a ZX81 clone. One and a half years later he got from his parents an Apple II Plus and fell in love with computers. At the age of 14 he started working self-employed fixing computers (initially Apple II compatibles and some years later he migrated to PCs) and at the same year he entered a trade high school in electronics (ORT Technological Institute).

Around one year after finishing high school he was invited to work there, where he stayed from 1993 to 2000. Initially working as a lab assistant fixing the school computers, he was quickly promoted to Advanced Technologies Lab Coordinator and instructor, when he then organized and gave several training courses and workshops about PC hardware and maintenance at this school.

In parallel with these activities and with his own higher education he started writing his first book, released in 1996.
