Phi Kappa Pi (ΦΚΠ) is a Canadian fraternity with its founding chapters located in Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Unlike other fraternities founded upon a single chapter, Phi Kappa Pi was the result of a union between the Sigma Pi Literary Society at the University of Toronto and the Alpha Beta Gamma Fraternity at McGill University in 1913.

The fraternity’s motto, “Canada’s Only National Fraternity”, reflects the fact that no other Canadian founded fraternity has ever expanded out of their home province.

Although members are adamant that they are in a Canadian fraternity, Canadian citizenship is not a pledging requirement.

History

The Sigma Pi (ΣΠ) Literary Society was founded in 1901 at the University of Toronto, while Alpha Beta Gamma (ΑΒΓ) was founded in 1905 at McGill University. The two Greek societies began negotiating the terms of a union in 1908, and in 1913 Phi Kappa Pi was founded.

Phi Kappa Pi was hurt in its infancy when the First World War broke out as many of its members chose to participate, but managed to expand shortly after the war when Zeta Gamma (ΖΓ) was chartered at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1926.

Since then Phi Kappa Pi has opened the following Chapters (note that only four chapters are active as of 2007):

*Alpha Iota Chapter (AI) at the University of British Columbia in 1922
*Delta Mu Chapter (ΔM) at the University of Alberta in 1939
*Tau Sigma Rho Chapter (ΤΣΡ) at the University of Manitoba in 1936
*Alpha Epsilon Chapter (AE) at the University of Waterloo in 1963
*Theta Kappa Omicron Chapter (TKO) at the University of Ottawa in 1998
*Omega Iota Chapter (ΩΙ) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2007

Notable alumni

*Justice John Gomery – Served as President of the Copyright Board of Canada and Commissioner of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities
*Dr. Philip Lapp – President of Philip A. Lapp Limited and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995
*Russell MacLellan - Former Premier of Nova Scotia.
*Joe Ghiz - Late Premier of Prince Edward Island and former Dean of Law at Dalhousie University.

Active chapters

Sigma Pi (ΣΠ)- Phi Kappa Pi’s oldest chapter, founded at the University of Toronto. Though it is located just off University of Toronto campus, Sigma Pi also considers pledges from Ryerson University, George Brown College and York University. The current Sigma Pi house has been at 85 Bedford Road since 1958; prior to this Sigma Pi was on campus on St. George Street before the development of Sydney Smith Hall forced them to move.

Alpha Beta Gamma (ΑΒΓ)- One of Phi Kappa Pi’s founding chapters, founded at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. ABG also accepts pledges from Mount Saint Vincent University, Saint Mary’s University and Concordia University. The ABG chapter is notable for having a revival in the late 1980’s which has seen it expand its membership considerably. This period of expansion also saw the chapter move into its current chapter house at 3444 Rue Hutchison.

Zeta Gamma (ΖΓ)- Founded at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the first fraternity on campus. Zeta Gamma was known as the Dalhousie Chapter until 1959 when it adopted its Greek name. Zeta Gamma is located on 1770 Robie Street.

Omega Iota (ΩΙ)- Founded at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2006, Omega Iota is Phi Kappa Pi’s newest chapter. As Oshawa is a short distance away from Toronto, the Omega Iota and Sigma Pi chapters often participate in each other’s events
