Gandhi is an Indian family name, mostly known for two prominent but unrelated Indian families, those of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948), the Indian independence leader often known in the west as Mahatma Gandhi, and of Indira Gandhi (1917–1984), the first woman Prime Minister of India .
