WAGM-DT1 is the Fox-affiliated television station for Presque Isle, Maine. The station is a first digital subchannel of CBS affiliate WAGM-TV which is owned by NEPSK Inc.. Over-the-air, WAGM-DT1 broadcasts a digital signal on UHF channel 16.1 from WAGM's transmitter which is located in Mars Hill. The site is at the top of Big Rock Ski Area on Mars Hill Mountain about one mile west of the United States / Canadian border. Via cable, it is offered on Time Warner channel 12. There is a high definition signal of the station on Time Warner digital cable channel 508. WAGM-DT1's parent station has studios on Brewer Road in Presque Isle. Along with network shows, syndicated programming includes: "The Insider", "Entertainment Tonight", "TMZ", and "Scrubs". It is known on-air as "Fox 8".

History

Even before the creation of WAGM-DT1, the main channel has had some history with the Fox network. In 1994, when the network gained broadcasting rights to the NFL's NFC games from CBS, WAGM aired them. This made WAGM the only station in the United States to air programs from all four major networks at the same time (when it was carrying some programming from NBC and ABC). This practice ended in 1997 and the area had to rely on the national Foxnet service via cable.

On September 12, 2006, preceding the shutdown of Foxnet, WAGM launched a new Fox digital subchannel to replace it. The new channel became available on WAGM's first subchannel. This forced the main digital signal to move to a new second subchannel. Such a placement is generally uncommon as most broadcasters number the signal equivalent to their analog signal as minor channel 1 and number other subchannels with higher minor channel numbers. On November 15, 2007, WAGM created a new separate website for WAGM-DT1. The layout is the same as Fox stations that are owned-and-operated by the network.

Newscasts

On the same day that WAGM-DT1 launched, WAGM began to produce a weeknight 10 o'clock newscast on the station. Also during the week, WAGM-DT1 rebroadcasts the morning news from the main channel.
