Vonnegut Hardware Company

In 1858 Clemens Vonnegut, Sr. bought the merchandise store he and his business partner Charles Volmer had run for several years. In 1898 Vonnegut, Sr. moved the business to 120 and 124 East Washington Street. Vonnegut, Sr. would remain president of the company until his death in 1906. In 1908 the store was incorported as the Vonnegut Hardware Company. His business was located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana and would remain a fixture for over 100 years.

Over time his sons had various interests in the company; some long-term and some only briefly.

History

*In 1869 Clemens Vonnegut, Jr. (eldest son) began working at the hardware store then left in 1890. He returned in 1910 and became Vice President of the company. *Bernard Vonnegut (second son) would have no interest in his father's company and ultimately choose a different career path. Author, Kurt Vonnegut, is one of Bernard's three children.

*Carl Prinzler, co-inventor of the Von Duprin panic bar device, was manager of the Builder's Hardware Department in 1903.

*In 1908 the company marketed the first panic bar device invented by Carl Prinzler and Henry H. DuPont under the name Von Duprin.
