Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
U.S. Route 12 serves as a main route in the city.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,727 people, 990 households, and 663 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,125.8 people per square mile (822.6/km²). There were 1,035 housing units at an average density of 806.8 per square mile (312.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.81% White, 0.15% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.68% of the population. 29.5% were of German, 24.2% Finnish, 15.3% Swedish and 9.8% Norwegian ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 990 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the city the population was spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $39,613, and the median income for a family was $51,645. Males had a median income of $35,362 versus $21,484 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,149. About 7.1% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 14.9% of those age 65 or over.
History
The first settlers came to the Cokato area in 1858. Early settlers were speculators from New York, New Hampshire and Maine. Soon after that European immigrants, predominantly from Finland and Sweden, but also from Norway, Germany, Poland, and Bohemia, arrived and settled the area.[4]
Culture
The city of Cokato is home to the Cokato Museum & Gust Akerlund Studio. The museum is a is a local history museum to dedicated to chronicling the story of the people of the city of Cokato and the surrounding townships in southwestern Wright County. The Akerlund Studio is a restored photography studio and home of Gust Akerlund, who operated the studio during the early twentieth century.[5]
Cokato hosts the Cokato Corn Carnival annually during the second week of August in Peterson Park next to Cokato Elementary. The highlight of the festival is the serving of free corn-on-the-cob, along with a parade, midway and carnival rides, musical entertainment, the Miss Cokato coronation, a cash prize drawing and other events.[6]
Notable natives & residents
David Bromstad, winner of season one of HGTV Design Star and the host of Color Splash with David Bromstad, was born in Cokato.
