Ngee Ann Secondary School (abbreviation: NASS) is an autonomous government-aided secondary school in Tampines, Singapore. The school was started by the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a Teochew clan foundation. Set up in 1994, Ngee Ann Secondary was a successor to the now defunct Tuan Mong High School which closed in that same year. It is also the youngest school in Singapore to be awarded the autonomous status till 2013. It has won several awards, including the Singapore Quality Class Award and Best Practice Award in Teaching and Learning. Construction works for PRIME have been fully completed in late 2010.Besides being name as the COE of ICT, the school have achieve names such as Microsoft Mentor School, Microsoft Pathfinder School, Microsoft Living Lab and also futureschools@Singapore.

The school is located at 1, Tampines Street 32, Singapore 529283. Bus service 291 (Townlink) and Bus 28 stop outside the school gate. The school is located very near to two infamous places in that area, the 201 shopping district and Tampines Mart. Students occasionally frequent these two areas for lunch and project discussion.

Education

Education is available in the four official languages of English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. As of most other schools in Singapore, NASS follows the system of bilingualism, which was initiated as a policy in 1978 by the Singapore government.[6]

From 2012, Ngee Ann Secondary School will offer the Enhanced Art Programme to provide greater opportunities for students with keen disposition and capability in art to develop their talent, as said by the Ministry of Education (Singapore), to provide an enriched learning environment. Ngee Ann Secondary is only 1 of the 4 schools in Singapore to offer this programme. The other programme which the MOE have offer with similar objectives is Enhanced Music Programme.

Infocomm Technology

The school has invested in the use of Information Technology for education. The school has currently two computer labs and ICT Studio for students that houses 40 computers each. A new subject, Computer Studies (CS), had also been started by the Singapore government in 2006,[7] and NASS accepts its first batch of CS students in 2008. and as of 2009, NASS has around 40 CS students in total. NASS has also been selected as one of the schools in the East to be known as EZ COE ICT (East Zone Center of Excellence Infocomm Technology) [8] on the 30 August 2007. The other school is Victoria School.

Achievements/Facts

  • The school choir was among 1 of the 15 schools in Singapore selected to perform as part of the Combined school choir for National Day Parade 2005
  • Jarod Lee did the school proud by winning the third season of Campus SuperStar. The show is a direct spin-off from the successful Project SuperStar 《绝对 SuperStar》. Jarod beat all 2000 over hopefuls in winning the title.
  • In the 2009 GCE 'O' Level Examination, the school achieve its best ever result with the highest getting 9 distinctions and with Shazana Zaihan from 4R4'09 becoming one of the three top Malay Student in Singapore.
  • The school Volleyball 'C' Girls team won the National Junior Volleyball championship (under 16 group) organised by Volleyball Association of Singapore in December 2010 beating our rival school, Dunman Secondary School 2-0.
  • For the first time in the school history, all 4 Uniform Group (NCC (Land), NPCC, Scouts, Girl Guides) achieve the GOLD award in their respective competitions in 2011.
  • The school along with Raffles Girls' School hosted the inaugural Singapore Maths Modelling Challenge in July 2011.

Records Broken

  • In 2009, the school broke the Singapore Books of Records for making 15,000 paper dragons and 13,500 maxu boxes as part of the 15 hour challenge where students stayed in school for 15 hours.
  • In 2010, the school broke the Singapore Books of Records for putting together a giant map of Singapore from 79.100 sign postcards.
  • Just recently, the school broke the Singapore Books of Records for the biggest paper origami display with 61,146 hand folded paper origami hearts.
