Diocese of Nocera

Diocese of Nocera

The Diocese of Nocera Umbra was a Roman Catholic diocese in Umbria, Italy.[1]

In 1915 the Diocese of Nocera Umbra was united with the Diocese of Gualdo Tadino to form the Diocese of Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino. In 1986 this was united with the Diocese of Assisi, to become the Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino.

History

According to a legend, the first Bishop of Nocera was St. Crispoldus, a disciple of the Apostles; his Germanic name renders this doubtful. Also doubtful is the tradition of the martyrdom of SS. Felix, Constantius, and Felicissimus.

The first authentic Bishops were Felix (412), Aprilis (499) and Liutardus (824); others were:

  • St. Rinaldo de Comitibus (1217) and Blessed Filippo Oderisi (1285), monks of Fonte Avellana; Blessed Alessandro Vincioli, O.M. (1363);
  • Thomas II, Bishop of Nocera, bishop from Acerno who served in Apulia in the 14th century
  • Giovanni Marcolini (1446), who restored the cathedral;
  • Varino Favorino (1514), a humanist;
  • Gerolano Mannelli (1545), founder of the seminary;
  • Marco Battaglini (1690), diocesan historian;
  • Francesco Luigi Piervissani (1800), exiled in 1809 because he refused the oath of allegiance to Napoleon.
