Junior Jüz

Junior Jüz

Junior Juz ( _kz. Кіші жүз) or Alshyns ( _kz. Алшын) are the Western subgroup of the Kazakhs. They originate from the Nogais of the Nogai Horde, which once was placed in Western Kazakhstan, but in the 16th cnetury it was defeated by the Kazakhs and the Russians and Nogais retreated to the Western part of their khanate, to the Kuban River steppes. In the 18th century they endanged inner Russian cities, so Russian Empire allied the Kalmucks to supplant Alshyns back to the Urals. There they formed the Junior Jüz. In the beginning of the 19th century they shifted some to the west, to Astrakhan Governorate, forming Bukey Horde there. Whereas the Russians considered them to be a part of Kazakhs since the 18th century, their self-determinationd wasn't Kazakh, but Alshyn up to the 20th century. As the Kazakh SSR was formed with Bukey Horde as the most remoted it's western part, situated geographically in the Europe. At the Soviet epoch the theme of non-Kazakh origin of Alshyns was tabooed. Even today they are not completely assimilated to the Kazakhs.
