Jüterbog belonged in the later
Middle Ages to thearchbishopric of Magdeburg . It was in Jüterbog that a treaty over the succession to theduchy of Jülich was made in March 1611 between theElectorate of Saxony and theMargraviate of Brandenburg . In November 1644 during theThirty Years' War , Swedish troops defeated an Imperial army near Jüterbog. The town passed to Saxony in the 1648Peace of Westphalia .The
Battle of Dennewitz occurred two miles southwest of Jüterbog on6 September 1813 during theNapoleonic Wars . The town passed to theKingdom of Prussia in the 1815Congress of Vienna and was subsequently administered within theProvince of Brandenburg . In 1871 it became part of theGerman Empire during theunification of Germany . Jüterbog was part ofEast Germany for 40 years until it was integrated as a part of the federal state ofBrandenburg in theGerman reunification in 1990.ights
The town is surrounded by a medieval wall, with three gateways, and contains two Protestant churches, of which that of St Nicholas (14th century) is remarkable for its three fine aisles. There are also a Roman Catholic church, an old town-hall and a modern school. Jüterbog carries on weaving and spinning both of flax and wool, and trades in the produce of those manufactures and in cattle. Vines are cultivated in the neighborhood.
