Martin Luther King High School is a comprehensive public high school in Riverside, California.

Background

Martin Luther King High School, commonly referred to as "King High School," is the first high school to be built in Riverside, California since 1973. The school opened in 1999 with 858 students in grades 9 and 10. Martin Luther King High School added grade 11 in 2000 and grade 12 in 2001. Its first class graduated in 2002. Its first four-year class (students who attended Martin Luther King High School for all four years of their high school career) graduated in 2003.

Enrollment at King High School has dramatically increased in the past several years as the population of Riverside has grown: During the 2006-2007 school year, total student enrollment reached 3,028. In 2009 enrollment stood at 3,055. Ninety-nine percent of Martin Luther King High School students live either in the communities of Orangecrest or Woodcrest. Ray Plutko served as the first principal of the school. In 2004 Karen Stevensen took Plutko's place as principal. She was followed by Dan Brooks in 2006, who held the position until June 2011. Darel Hansen was selected as principal starting in July 2011.

Academics

In November 2002, Martin Luther King High School was one of twelve schools honored by the Siemens Foundation for having one of the most extensive, rigorous and promising Advanced Placement math and science course offerings in the region[1].

Martin Luther King High School was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2005 and 2009[2].

Martin Luther King High School an excellent music program. Their chamber singers, show choir, and treble choir have won numerous awards and traveled to various locations around the United States and to Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The school's marching band and colorguard, the Riverside Kingsmen, have performed at Disneyland and in the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade[3]. The Riverside Kingsmen performed at London, England's New Year's Parade with the RCC Marching Tigers on January 1, 2011[4][5].

In 2008, Martin Luther King High School attained an Academic Performance Index score of 801, going above their goal and scoring the highest in its school district[2].

In 2009, Martin Luther King High School's Academic Performance Index score rose to 817[citation needed].

Choirs

Martin Luther King High School has five choirs, all under the direction of Brian Holm. There is Mixed Choir which is the beginners level co-ed choir. Mens Choir an intermediate all male choir. Treble Choir another intermediate choir but for women. Show Choir a co-ed advanced choir that combines singing and dancing. Then finally there is Chamber Singers the final choir which is coed and advanced choir. All 5 choir participate widely throughout southern California in competitions. For example, the mixed choir and men choir participate in Music in the Parks every year. Treble Choir participates in local festivals as well as competitions yearly such as {[Heritage Festival||Heritage Festivals]]. Show Choir and Chamber Singer participate a lot together. During the Christmas season you can find them out in the community performing for local elementary and middle schools as well as senior citizen centers and for the Retired Teachers Organization. But they also perform separately, Show Choir has performed in Show Choir competitions in southern California placing in the top three every time, as well as attending Heritage Festivals and achebieng a Gold status every time. Chamber Singer attends festivals in Riverside, Ca and Fullerton, Ca annually. They have also particed pated in the Disneyland Candlelight Festivle for 11 years, since the school opened, which is a huge honor. Also they attend Heritage Festivles and achieve Gold Status each time. The King Choirs put on three concerts a year (fall, winter, and spring) and end the year with a barbecue in Kings outdoor amphitheatre.

Athletics

King High School has a rivalry with Poly High School in both athletics and academics.

Athletic awards and distinctions earned by the school's sports teams include:

- Baseball Sunkist League Champions 2004, Ivy League Champions 2008

- B Basketball League Champions 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and Southern Section Semi-Finals 2004, 2007; Southern Section CIF FINALS 2002; Southern California Section Champions 2002, and California State CIF Division 2 Champs in 2002, CIF Division 1A Champions 2008, CIF Division 1AA Champions 2009.

- Boys "Cross Country" League Champions 1999, 2004, 2005, 2010. The team won the school's first-ever League Title in 1999 (Arrowhead League) and advanced to the CIF Finals in 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2010. Individual Lane Werley (class of 2011) qualified as an individual to run in the 2009 Nike Cross Nationals after finishing 3rd in the Division One CIF State Finals. He finished 25th at the Nike Nationals. Werley again qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) after finishing 3rd at the 2010 State Finals. He finished in 6th place at the 2010 NXN meet and was ranked by ESPN/Rise as the 6th fastest runner in the nation at the end of the 2010 season.

- Girls Cross Country has won the league title 11 years -- 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. CIF-SS Finalists 2002-2010. State Finalists 2009. Individual runners to qualify for the California State Championships include Carissa Bowman (2006), Kelsi Tippets (2008) and Hanna Peterson (2010).

- G Tennis - Undefeated League Champions 10 years in a row 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009; CIF Finalist 2002, Semi-Finals 2003, Semi-Finals 2008, Quarter-Finals 2009

- B Tennis - Undefeated League Champions 7 years in a row 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007

- G Track & Field - League Champions 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010.

- B Track & Field - Undefeated league Champions 5 years in a row 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, also winning in 2008. Lane Werley qualified for the 2010 State Finals in the 3200m, and then competed at the New Balance Nationals in June 2010. He competed in the 5000 meters race, finishing 6th overall and earning King High's first-ever "All American" title.
