SMS Tegetthoff

SMS Tegetthoff

SMS "Tegetthoff" was an Austro-Hungarian dreadnought battleship, named after Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, 19th century Austrian admiral most notable for defeating the Italian Navy in the Battle of Lissa.

"Tegetthoff" was built at the Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino yard, Trieste. After the First World War she was handed over to Italy, who had her broken up several years later.

After construction in 1912 an earlier armored battleship named SMS "Tegetthoff" was renamed SMS "Mars".

After ship was dismantled, one of her main guns was displayed in Brindisi, at the "Mariner's Monument", where it can still be found. Her ships' bell was donated in 1942 to the German cruiser "Prinz Eugen".
