The Current is a journal of contemporary politics, culture and Jewish affairs at Columbia University. Launched in December 2005, "The Current" publishes essays on a broad range of subjects, with letters to the editor, an editorial, and book reviews appearing in each issue.

Its editorials have addressed issues such as university speech codes [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/summer2006/speechcodes.html] , controversial campus speakers [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/fall2006/edification-not-provocation.html] , corporate divestment [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/winter2007/from-the-editors.html] , humanitarian activism [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/spring2007/from-the-editors.html] , the Saffron Revolution in Burma [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/fall2007/standing-with-the-saffron-revolution.html] , and the history of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/spring2008/from-the-editors.html] .

In the most recent Summer 2008 issue [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/summer2008.html] , "The Current" published an editorial regarding the 2008 Summer Olympics [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/summer2008/hirsch.html] , an investigative piece exploring the role of the Jewish community in South Africa [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/summer2008/greenberg.html] , and a review of a new book by Samantha Power, "Chasing the Flame" [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/summer2008/arrow.html] . "The Current's" Spring 2007 issue was the first-ever Columbia publication to be printed in an environmentally friendly manner. "The Current"'s paper is 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified, and 50% of it comes from recycled sources, of which 25% is post-consumer waste. Additionally, no chlorine or acids were used to bleach the paper or publish the journal. [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/current/articles/spring2007/to-our-readers.html] It is not yet known whether other Columbia publications will follow suit and move toward 'green' publishing.
