Twelve Pains of Christmas

Twelve Pains of Christmas

The Twelve Pains Of Christmas is a popular parody of the 12 Days of Christmas carol, which was first released in 1987 and has continued to enjoy holiday radio airplay ever since. It is performed by Bob Rivers and is available on his Twisted Christmas album.

Concept

The main concept of the parody, as described by its lyrics, are to describe all the things about Christmas that a majority of people would see as less flattering, such as decorating and searching for the right tree for that year.

The song starts out as "The first thing of Christmas that is such a pain to me," and then continues on from there in a similar structure to its source material. However, a few key differences exist from the source material and this song. One of the main differences is that instead of the same singer singing each "pain", there are different singers in Bob Rivers' comedy group that take turns in describing each pain, with the main singers that introduce the number of the pain singing the 1st pain and the 5th pain.

This enables the second difference, in which at certain points in the song, the singers will, instead of singing the actual name of the "pain", to say something related to their pain, with the only unchanged lines being the "5 months of bills" and the first pain. Another difference is in pain #8, the actual name of the pain is never actually said in detail, but rather shown through the cause of the pain.

The twelve pains described are in the external link.
