Foundry Sand testing

Sand in the foundry industry is the most commonly used, least understood substance. In a sand casting foundry (Refer to Sand Casting) the sands which are used for making moulds or cores are mainly of following types.
1. Green Sand
2. Resin Coated Sand
3. Molasses
4. Cold Box Sand
5. Hot Box Sand
6. CO2 Sand
Foundry sand is the sand which is prepared for making moulds or cores. The preparation process of the sand involves various parameters in accordance with their type, and after preparation there area various parameters of the sand which should be tested to ensure defect free casting. In a sand casting foundry there are only two reasons for rejection of the casting - metal and sand, each of which has a large number of internal variables. The defects arising from the sand can be prevented by using sand testing equipment to measure the various properties of the sand. The following are the most popular manufacturers of foundry sand testing equipments.

Green Sand Testing:

Green Sand testing comprises more than 25 different tests. The sand technologists in the foundries adapts the tests that are relevant for the casting defects observed due to sand. The basic testing parameters are:
1. Moisture Content
2. Permeability
3. Green Compression Strength
4. Compactability
4. Wet tensile strength
5. Mouldability
6. Friability
7. Loss on Ignition
8. Volatiles Content
8. Grain size & Distribution
