Philipsburg is a town in and the county seat of Granite County, Montana, United States.GR|6 The population was 914 at the 2000 census. The town was named after the famous mining engineer Philip Deidesheimer, who designed and supervised the construction of the ore smelter around which the town originally formed. Philipsburg is located at coor dms|46|19|59|N|113|17|48|W|city (46.333108, -113.296564)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 914 people, 408 households, and 234 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,108.9 people per square mile (430.4/km²). There were 506 housing units at an average density of 613.9/sq mi (238.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.08% White, 1.31% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 1.20% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30% of the population.

There were 408 households out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.6% were non-families. 38.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $24,559, and the median income for a family was $32,750. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $17,885 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,951. About 16.7% of families and 19.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.3% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.
