Mascot

Cypress High School's mascot is a centurion

The school mascot is the Centurion of Roman Empire fame. The school colors are navy blue, orange, and white.

However, the helmet worn by the character depicted in the school logo is indeed Spartan in origin and not at all a Roman Centurion's.

Sports

Cypress's sports teams compete in the Empire League, in CIF Southern Section. Their main rival is nearby Kennedy High School.

Badminton

In 2010, Cypress High School Varsity Badminton team won CIF Division II Runner Up. This is the first badminton CIF-SS title won by Cypress Badminton.

Baseball

In 2007, the Centurions were ranked in the Top 25 for all Prep teams nationwide. Led by the All-American 3B and first round MLB draft selection Josh Vitters, the school recorded a 24-6 record.[1] In 2005, the baseball team won the 2005 CIF-SS Division II title.

Basketball

Cypress won League in 2003, 2004, and 2010 and reached the Quarterfinals in 2003. They have had a few All County players in the last few years, including Matt Reid who led the county in scoring the entire season and Dominque Ricks who was the starting center for Long Beach State when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Volleyball

In 2007, The Cypress High School Girl's Volleyball team won its first CIF Championship game defeating California High School of Whittier. They went on to compete in the State. They finished the season with a record of 32-2.

Football

In 2007, Cypress High School won its first CIF-SS Southern Division championship game in school history. 2006 was a successful season for the Centurions. They started the season 6-0, finishing 10-3 and reaching the CIF-SS Southern Division semi-finals. In 2008 and 2009 the varsity football team took the league championship with a record of 5-0.

Softball

The Cypress softball program won Southern Section titles in 1983, 1987, and 1992.

Cross country

The Cypress Men's cross country team made it to the State Meet in 2002. The team was led by super-star David Napper, who placed 5th with a time of 15:05 for the 5k, helping the team place 10th overall in the entire state for Div. II. After having an illustrious high school running career, David went on to Yale University where he broke many freshman school records in both track and cross country. Coach: Coco. The teams Semi Captain and Semi Super-star Christopher Tracy also put in Fantastic performances. He attends Cypress College where he focuses on academics, not setting the track on fire. More recently, the men's team was a 2007 CIF Southern Section Finalist for Div. II under the coaching of Jason Bruton. The team was led by standout seniors, Eric Eyman, Kirk Hunter, and sophomore Kyle O'Reilly. Kyle O'Reilly led his team to its second empire league championship in 2008, something Chris Tracy tried, but could never accomplish.

Tennis

The Cypress Boy's Varsity Team made history when it became the first Back to Back Empire League Championship Tennis Team in the school's history after winning in the 1998-1999 seasons and with the 1999 team reaching the CIF Southern Division Quarterfinals. Led by Coach Carrie Vaughn and Team Captain Nikhil Daga, the Centurions amassed a 19-1 record during that span. Standout Robert Giuliano completed Cypress' first ever undefeated season in 1999 going 20-0 (doubles) and 10-0 (singles). In 2000, Navin Kumar and Sonny Lim finished as the #1 ranked doubles team in the Empire League and went on to capture the Empire League's Individuals Championship Doubles Title and Co-Most Valuable Player Award. In 1994 (coached by Ken Nakama), Tony Hughes and Brent Tsuda won the Empire League Doubles Championship, which was followed up nicely in 1995 with an Empire League Doubles title from Bryen Woo and Tim Wing. In that same year of 1994, Senior Leo Varshavsky almost pulled off the miracle upset of #1 seed Ben Chung in the Semi-Finals, losing 7-6 in the 3rd Set. Leo did make history that year by being the first player in state history to beat an opponent with a broken-stringed racket.

Soccer

Cypress is blessed with a talented group every year that can put on a pretty good show. The early to mid 90's were a decent time period for the Centurions, with an Empire League Championship and CIF Semi-Final appearance in 1990 and a CIF Quarter-Final appearance in 1994. There have been three Empire League MVP's (Joey Meza 1994, Ethan Wardle 2008, Shawn Hansen 2009) that played for Cypress. Cypress has won the Empire League just 3 times in the school's history 1978, 1990, 2007.

Waterpolo

There were never very many bright spots for this sport until the year of '03. This is the year Goal keeper Greg Quick broke two records. The most blocks in a game, and the most blocks in a season. This is also the first year they first made CIF... The Boys team made noise behind the lead of Goalkeeper Greg Quick and the defense of Scott Kaufman but they were no match for Huntington Beach High (which moved up a division the following year). The following year Scott Kaufman and Mike Dillard led them to another league title and out of the first round. Coach: Darren Sandvig
