Plains is a town in Sanders County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,126 at the 2000 census. It was originally known as Wild Horse Plains, although the name was shortened over time.fact|date=July 2008

Geography

Plains is located at coor dms|47|27|31|N|114|53|6|W|city (47.458504, -114.885024)GR|1. The town straddles the Clark Fork River with the fairgrounds on one shore and the town proper on the other.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,126 people, 472 households, and 297 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,005.3 people per square mile (776.3/km²). There were 532 housing units at an average density of 947.4/sq mi (366.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.91% White, 0.09% African American, 1.24% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.36% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.93% of the population.

There were 472 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,331, and the median income for a family was $30,893. Males had a median income of $26,875 versus $16,058 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,010. About 16.7% of families and 20.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.4% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Plains High School, a Class B school, serves local teenagers. Its students can play any of eight sports.fact|date=July 2008
