Junkyard (band)

Junkyard (band)

Junkyard is a hard rock band formed in Los Angeles by two Texans, David Roach (vocals) and Chris Gates (guitar, ex-Big Boys). Members came and went before they offered the drum stool to Patrick Muzingo, who in turn brought with him bassist Clay Anthony. The final piece of the puzzle was the addition of guitarist Brian Baker, whom Gates knew from the punk circuit when he was in such bands as Minor Threat and Dag Nasty. The self-titled debut album, produced by the legendary Tom Werman, followed a slicker hard rock path than the punk roots of the members. (As is typical of Werman productions, the sound of the album is more slick and polished than their live sound was.) This debut album included what is perhaps the band's biggest hit, "Hollywood," as well as two other minor singles that also received airplay, "Hands Off" and "Simple Man." The follow-up was more of the same raunchy music, but just before its release Todd Muscat (who played with Muzingo in Decry and with Gilby Clarke in Kill for Thrills) replaced Anthony.

A third album was recorded but never officially released as the band was dropped from their recording contract (it has since been bootlegged under the name of XXX and The Joker). The writing was on the wall for the group and they disbanded. A live album was released in early 2000, and the band did a few live shows in America and Japan (with Tim Mosher replacing Baker). A mini album of new and old songs was released in 2003 and the band continues to tour from time to time. In 2003, they played a show in Los Angeles at The Viper Room and at the Serie Z Festival in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain) in 2003. In 2006, they played one gig at The Pound in San Francisco.
