IGS Go server

The IGS, short for Internet Go Server, is a server that allows players of the game of Go to play against others over the Internet. Started in 1992, it was the first server of its kind.

History

IGS was first started in February 1992 [cite web | url = http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/essay/history1992.html | title = A Brief History of IGS, the Early Years - 1992 | author = Jim Z Yu | accessdate = 2007-12-11 ] . The first server was located at the University of New Mexico. Within the first year, two more servers were deployed, one in Berkeley and one in France.

Other activities

Besides being a Go server, the IGS also hosts several art galleries. The main gallery [ [http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/galleryintro.html IGS art gallery] ] contains Japanese and Chinese art that has a Go related theme. Other galleries deal with art made by strong players and with photography from the 19th and early 20th century, related to San Francisco and Chinatown.
