Information
The highway begins about 40 to 50 km east of Alexandroupoli and begins at the GR-2 or the old Egnatia Odos and the ancient Via Egnatia. 2 km north is a new interchange with a loop right lane from the southbound lanes to lanes leading to Turkey. The section is also the E90 (Igoumenitsa - Kozani - Thessaloniki - Aleaxandroupoli. Throughout its entire length except for the vicinity of Karagac, the highway is no far than 8 km west of the Evros and runs within. The highway bypasses Soufli, Didymoteicho and Orestiada. A few hills lie to the southern portion. The highway breaks off a branch to Karagac and Edirne. The highway ends in Ormenio at the Greek-Bulgarian border. The only major river that the highway passes over is the Arda in the north. It does not link with other highway for its entire length of 200 km, only a few tertiary roads connects the highway since the western portion of the prefecture is depopulated along with the Rodopi or mountains.
The highway was first paved after the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), the remainder was paved in the 1950s.
