Plot summary

When Heidi was an infant, she and her mentally disabled mother, So B. It, (who can only say 23 words) arrived at the doorstep of a woman named Bernadette, who suffered from agoraphobia. Bernadette accepted and loved them,Bernadette goes through a secret door in her apartment into theres and throughout Heidi's childhood, Bernadette took good care of Heidi and her mother. Heidi has a unique lucky streak in her. Eventually, Heidi begins to question her past and the mysterious word her mother constantly repeats: soof.

Each time Heidi asks Bernadette where she and her mother came from, Bernadette would simply answer that the day they walked into her life was the best thing that ever happened to her. Heidi became very depressed and restless. When Heidi finds an old camera in a drawer she is cleaning out, she develops the film, she sees glimpses of her family's past in the pictures, which are of a Christmas party. Twelve-year-old Heidi then sets out on a cross-country bus trip to find answers to her many questions. She goes to a home called Hilltop in Liberty, New York.

She finally comes upon the home for the mentally disabled, run and owned by Thurman Hill, and discovers that her mother's real name was Sophia, and had been involved with Elliot, Thurman's son, and when her mother became pregnant with Heidi, Thurman made a bargain with Sophia's mother. Thurman would pay for their living costs, as long as he didn't have to see the baby because he couldn't stand the thought of adding another damaged child into the world. So they then moved to Reno to live their life there. She is found (sort of) by Ruby and Roy, who take her in after a luck game (coin tossing). When Heidi is in Liberty, where she learns her past, she learns the shocking news that her mother has died in her sleep. Her mother had been sick beforehand. They have a funeral in Liberty where Mama was born and raised. Heidi goes back to Reno and enrolls into a middle school after being homeschooled after Ruby and Roy give her the idea of getting her enrolled in the junior high in Liberty. Although she denies their offer the thought of getting enrolled in junior high sticks in her brain.
