Kennett is a city in Dunklin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 11,260 at the 2000 census. Kennett is the county seat of Dunklin CountyGR|6. The Kennett Micropolitan Statistical Area consists of Dunklin County. The city is located in the southeast corner of Missouri, 4 miles east of Arkansas and 20 miles from the Mississippi River. According to "The History of Craighead County Arkansas", by Henry Lee Williams, Kennett was founded on the site of the old American Indian town of Chilicataw, an area that was near the Trail of Tears, when the Indians were forceably relocated from Georgia to lands west.

Geography

Kennett is located at coor dms|36|14|17|N|90|3|6|W|city (36.237974, -90.051727)GR|1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (18.2 km²).The entire 18.2 km² (8.7) is land; none of the city is covered by water. The city is in an area of Missouri called the Bootheel.

Education

Kennett has six public schools. The pre-school is called Kennett Head Start, the elementary schools are West Kindergarten, South Elementary School and Masterson Elementary, Kennett Middle School and the Kennett High School. There is a private school, Kennett Christian Academy.

Kennett is home to Southeast Missouri State University at Kennett, a branch of the Cape Girardeau main campus.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2007, there were 13,163 people, 4,540 households, and 3,069 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,691.4 people per square mile (652.8/km²). There were 4,875 housing units at an average density of 732.3/sq mi (282.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.44% White, 13.27% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.

There were 4,540 households of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are "non-families." Of all households, 28.9% are made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% are under the age of 18, 8.7% are from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,088, and the median income for a family was $34,167. Males had a median income of $29,958 versus $18,770 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,397. Living below the poverty line are 26.1% of the population and 20.5% of families. 37.5% of those under the age of 18 and 24.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
